Likely dating somewhere in the 1940’s time frame, this is a beautiful old one-sided neon sign that spent its life hanging above the doorway of the office of an old motel. I’m not a neon expert, I collect early office related items such as oak filing cabinets, roll top desks, ink bottles, telephones, typewriters… Anything that would be in an early office and this was a perfect fit. It measures thirty inches wide (30) and it works when plugged in. At some point a previous owner had rewired it as the cord and plug are fairly modern. It has lots of character and gives off a beautiful red glow especially at night. The overall condition is very nice with some typical character. At some point someone painted the box white and the red front has some white splatter but personally I think it adds character and it’s a nice look. I like items to show their age, I’m not interested in an 80 year old sign that looks brand new. The age is what adds beauty, uniqueness and character. The O and the E both turn and go inside the sign box and the letters are attached to a small glass pole sticking out from the box about one inch. They are attached to these small poles with thin wire which as the poles appear to have broke. I’m not an expert and this is the only neon sign I’ve ever owned, I don’t know but it seems that perhaps the neon OFFICE was once attached to the small glass poles and may have separated. That would explain the wire wrapped around it. Again, I’m not an expert and I do not know for sure but the sign works perfectly. I’ve been told that the sign dates to the 1940’s and that seems correct to me. A beautiful early working motel OFFICE neon sign… These signs are getting harder and harder to find.
